EU Approves Google’s Acquisition of Wiz | Boost Security with Wiz Merger

Spread the word

The European Commission has granted unconditional approval for Google’s proposed $32 billion acquisition of cloud security firm Wiz, clearing the way for one of the largest cybersecurity mergers of 2025. The decision under the EU Merger Regulation means the deal can proceed without remedies or restrictions.

Why the EU Approved the Deal

After a detailed market investigation, regulators concluded that the acquisition does not harm competition in the European Economic Area (EEA). Key points include:

  • Customer choice preserved: Even if Google bundles Wiz’s platform with Google Cloud, customers can still switch to alternatives like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
  • No sensitive data risk: The Commission confirmed Google will not gain access to commercially sensitive data from rival cloud providers.
  • Market share context: Google remains behind AWS and Microsoft in cloud infrastructure, ensuring strong competition continues.

Teresa Ribera, Executive VP for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, stated:

“Google stands behind Amazon and Microsoft in terms of market shares in cloud infrastructure, and our assessment confirmed that customers will continue to have credible alternatives and the ability to switch providers.”

Global Clearance

This follows the U.S. antitrust approval in November 2025, meaning Google now has the green light in both major jurisdictions to finalize the deal.

Strategic Impact

  • Boosting Google Cloud: Wiz’s multi‑cloud security solutions will strengthen Google’s cybersecurity portfolio.
  • Industry consolidation: The deal is one of eight cybersecurity mergers exceeding $1 billion in 2025, reflecting the growing importance of cloud security.
  • Neutrality concerns: While Google promises Wiz will remain accessible across all major cloud platforms, some experts worry its independence could erode, pushing customers deeper into Google’s ecosystem.
