Microsoft Introduces New Windows Security Enhancements Under Secure Future Initiative

Spread the word

Microsoft has unveiled a series of Windows security and privacy improvements designed to strengthen user protection and increase transparency. These updates, part of the Secure Future Initiative (SFI) announced in November 2023, mark a significant step toward making Windows safer by default.

Windows Baseline Security Mode

One of the headline features is Windows Baseline Security Mode, which ensures that only properly signed applications, drivers, and services can run. This safeguard helps prevent tampering, malware injection, and unauthorized changes.

  • Default protection: Enabled automatically for all users.
  • Override options: Administrators and users can grant exceptions when necessary.
  • Developer visibility: APIs allow developers to check if protections are active and whether exceptions exist.

Secure Boot Certificate Updates

Microsoft also confirmed that Secure Boot certificates will begin expiring in June 2026, with refreshed certificates rolling out to supported Windows releases. Secure Boot protects devices from the moment they power on, blocking unsigned software before Windows starts.

User Transparency and Consent

To give users more control, Microsoft is introducing User Transparency and Consent features:

  • Clear prompts when apps attempt to access sensitive resources such as files, camera, or microphone.
  • Review and change decisions later, ensuring flexibility.
  • Higher standards for apps and AI agents, requiring greater transparency for IT administrators and users.

Benefits for Developers

Microsoft is providing tools and APIs to streamline adoption of these new standards. Existing compliant apps will continue to work, giving developers time to adjust. The rollout will be phased, with feedback from developers and partners shaping the implementation.

Why It Matters

These enhancements reflect Microsoft’s broader vision:

  • Stronger default safeguards.
  • Greater visibility into app behavior.
  • Clearer consent controls for users.

By combining runtime integrity checks, Secure Boot updates, and transparency prompts, Microsoft is positioning Windows as a platform where security and privacy are not optional add‑ons but built‑in foundations.
